Mega Man X3 takes place in a fictional future in which the world is populated by humans and intelligent robots called "Reploids". Like their human creators, some Reploids involve themselves in destructive crime and are labelled as "Mavericks". Doppler and his utopia of Maverick followers. Mega Man X3 follows in the tradition of both the original Mega Man series and the Mega Man X series as a standard action - platform game. The player traverses a series of eight stages in any order while gaining various power-ups and taking the special weapon of each stage's end boss. Mega Man X3 is the first game in the series in which Zero is a playable character albeit in limited form in addition to X. Like its predecessor, Mega Man X2 , X3 features the "Cx4" chip to allow for some limited 3D vector graphics and transparency effects. The 3DO Interactive Multiplayer version was planned, but was canceled due to the fall of the console.

Sure, the stages needed to be well designed and the robot masters had to be memorable, but unless the music was really good, the players would simply turn off the console and find something else to do. The Mega Man development team must have realised this, since the music that accompanies the blue bomber in his old adventures is nearly always good. Naturally, however, something had to change when the Next Generation Reploid entered the scene. And indeed, things changed. Gone were the synth beeps and bloops, and in their place came screaming electric guitars and heavy bass beats. I myself got the feeling that this was what the man behind Mega Man - Keiji Inafune - had envisioned from the start.

It becomes available to the player once the game has been cleared once. The OVA, which serves as a prologue to the game itself, shows the events which lead directly to the beginning of the game and explains Sigma 's reasons for rebelling humanity as well as X 's powers. The OVA begins with an operation of the Maverick Hunters trying to stop the rampage of a berserk Mechaniloid that is devastating a building. While Sigma , Zero and the rest of the 17th Unit are already on the ground securing the area, X is dispatched from an aircraft via drop point and delivers the first blow at the Maverick Mechaniloid, with it being potent enough to initially force it down and stun it. After X fired another round to fling himself to the side of a building, Sigma then ordered for Chill Penguin to have his unit commence their operation.
